Datadog’s Commitment to OpenTelemetry

Datadog has treated OpenTelemetry as a first-class citizen since the project's founding, when we contributed our Java agent as one of OTel's original CNCF code donations. Since then, we've remained one of the project's most active contributors, with CNCF board representation, repo maintainers across multiple SIGs, and ongoing investment in upstream SDKs, the Collector, and semantic conventions, including the emerging GenAI standard. That commitment shapes how OpenTelemetry data is treated inside Datadog: as a first-class telemetry source, not a secondary import format.

Enhance visibility across all OpenTelemetry applications and teams, at any scale

Ingest and unify OpenTelemetry data without lock-in

Datadog ingests OpenTelemetry data through any upstream-compatible OTel Collector distribution, with no Datadog-specific exporters or components required. The same Infrastructure, APM, Kubernetes, and RUM products that Datadog-native customers use are powered directly from OTel data, with native support for OTel datatypes like exponential and explicit histograms to preserve metric fidelity end-to-end. Unified tagging correlates metrics, traces, and logs across OTel and Datadog conventions, so dashboards and alerts work the same way regardless of how your teams instrument.

Accelerate resolution with AI-driven troubleshooting on familiar dashboards

OTel data flows into the same dashboards and Monitors that Datadog-native customers use, so teams can alert and visualize without learning a new workflow. From there, Trace Queries surface service relationships and pinpoint the source of errors, latency, and user impact, while Bits AI automatically detects anomalies, outliers, and root causes to accelerate resolution. That same workflow extends to AI applications, with native support for OpenTelemetry GenAI semantic conventions bringing LLM and agent traces directly into LLM Observability alongside the rest of the stack.

Standardize observability across teams and services

Datadog Fleet Automation lets teams validate, troubleshoot, and manage OTel Collector pipeline configurations at scale, directly within Datadog and without requiring a dedicated Collector expert on staff. Datadog Internal Developer Portal enriches OTel data with ownership details, on-call coverage, documentation, and runbooks, so incident response stays efficient as teams and microservices grow. This keeps observability practices consistent as OTel adoption scales across the organization, so platform teams maintain governance without slowing down the developers who depend on them.

“Datadog's support for interoperability with OpenTelemetry proved to be the best solution for the level of scale, observability, and support we need.”
